The tribunal dismissed the tenants' application for moving expenses and increased rent, finding the landlord's conduct did not induce them to move. It nonetheless found that the landlord substantially interfered with the tenants' reasonable enjoyment, but awarded no remedy.

Maximum increase in Ontario this year
Ontario caps most rent increases at 2.1% for 2026. Rent can only go up once every 12 months, and your landlord must give at least 90 days written notice on Form N1. Important exception: units first occupied for residential purposes after November 15, 2018 are exempt from the cap entirely — the landlord can raise rent by any amount with proper notice. Rent control also does not apply between tenancies (vacancy decontrol), so a landlord may reset the rent to any amount for a new tenant.
